Help for maltese with liver and diabetes?

Knew my 10 yr aged Maltese (my baby) wasn’t right. Took him to vet, he had mislaid the little weight as good as red red blood exam showed all liver numbers 5-10X over norm. Then did the little liver poison bile exam as good as all was high. Gave him the little meds as good as pronounced though ultrasound can’t be certain of expect issue. A week after we knew something wrong cuz he was celebration outrageous amts as good as peeing everywhere. Took him in as good as right away told his red red blood sugarine was 550 as good as has diabetes. Says in between liver as good as diabetes not most to do which we should suffer the couple of days with him as good as afterwards let him go to sleep. Says as good tough to umpire diabetes with already carrying liver problems. I’m not good off financially though will try to come up with income if there is the cure. Haven’t stopped crying. Anyone have ideas? Doesn’t appear to be in pain, only sleepy as good as thirsty. My son has youthful diabetes as good as is so upset, doesn’t assimilate because he can tarry as good as the maltese Jazz can’t.

There are 2 suggestions to question “Help for maltese with liver and diabetes?”

  1. Try putting your dog on the right amount of insulin – may take a while to regulate it (took a month with our dachshund) but can certainly give your dog some good quality of life still.

We thought our dachsie was going to have to be euthanized too, we had a "curve" done (testing his blood sugar every 2 hours = he stayed at the vet for a day for this), started with 8 units of Humulin (same insulin humans use), then 6, stabilized at 7 units.
That was 2 years ago and he’s still going strong (13 years old) and doing very well.

As I said, it took a month to get the right dose of insulin and he was pretty sick during that time, peed oceans, dranks constantly, lost weight, had one diabetic seizure, but with perserverence and some trial and error, we got him on the right amount of insulin and he’s doing great.

Costs us about 70.- for a 3 months supply, plus needles, our dog gets 2 injections of insulin, one after morning meal, one after his evening meal. Your dog is probably a lot smaller than an 18 pound dachshund, so will cost you less.
You will need to keep him on a regular schedule and feed and inject him at about the same times each day, but even with some liver issues (ours does too), there’s a good chance your dog can have some more good time. Doesn’t hurt to try, we’re so glad we didn’t euthanize our dog, it’s been 2 years now and he’s doing very well.

There’s no cure for diabetes, but it can certainly be regulated. We tried checking his blood sugar at home, was a horror, thin old dog with almost undetectible veins, so we had our vet do it every couple of days at first until we stablized the insulin dose. Now we have him checked by a vet tech every couple of months as long as he’s doing well, so it’s not very expensive.

Good luck — give insulin a try – I hope it works out for your dog as well as it did for ours.

  2. There are no cures for this. Your Vet is right to tell you to put it down. It is the kindest Gift you can give your dog at this time.
