I’m 28 weeks pregnant & my doctor wants me on a low carb diet…What things to avoid & what to eat more?

My 1 hour glucose exam was a bit normal to tall so my alloy wants me upon a low carb diet for right away upon we theory to equivocate removing gestational diabetes.
She pronounced to eat reduction rice…I usually similar to white steamed rice is which bad to eat? we suspicion oily rice was bad as well as steam rice was good?

  1. What you eat is not going to give you Gestational Diabetes. Gestational Diabetes occurs because pregnancy hormones make your cells insulin resistant. In most women, their pancreas is able to produce increased amounts of insulin to maintain a proper level of blood glucose, but in about 5-8% of women their pancreas can’t keep up and they develop Gestational Diabetes. I had Gestational Diabetes with my 4th pregnancy and I am now diagnosed with a pre-diabetic condition called Glucose Intolerance. Foods that contain carbohydrates are breads, cereals, grains, pasta, rice, fruit, milk, yogurt, legumes (dried beans), starchy vegetables (corn, potatoes, green peas), starchy snacks (chips, crackers), and sweet snacks. You can eat rice, you just need to be aware of what a serving is. When eating with attention to your carb intake, consider that each serving is going to be equal to about 15 grams of carbohydrates. You don’t want to eliminate carbs from your diet as this is how your body gets energy, but you do want to eat them in moderation. For me, I eat about 30 grams of carbohydrates for breakfast and 2 snacks. I aim for either 45 or 60 grams of carbs at lunch or dinner. If I have 60 at lunch I’ll have 45 at dinner or vice versa. When counting carbs, a serving of white rice is only 1/3 cup for one 15 gram serving of carbs. So, you’ll want to measure things like white rice when you eat them so you know you aren’t overdoing it. It is helpful to increase your vegetable and protein intake along with decreasing your carb intake. Since so many foods have carbohydrates in them you will want to become a label reader. It helps a lot to eat high fiber items, too. So, try whole grain bread, looking for something that has at least 4 grams of fiber with even more being better. There is a good rule that you can follow when counting carbs and that is if there are more than 5 grams of fiber in a serving than you can subtract the # of grams of fiber from the carbohydrate grams to get how much carbs the food is worth. For example, I buy English Muffins from Thomas’ called Better Start Light Multi-Grain. Each muffin has 24 grams of carbs, but 8 grams of dietary fiber. So, I can subtract 8 from 24 and get 16 grams of carbs. This frees up breakfast to include another serving of carbs so I can have 1 cup of raspberries and a scrambled egg for a good, filling, nutritious breakfast. Or I can have 1/2 cup of berries and 1/2 cup or skim milk. You can have white steamed rice, but cut back so you are only eating 2/3-1 cup per meal and pair it with some stir fried vegetables and chicken. There isn’t anything you can’t eat, but read labels and eat in moderate amounts.

  2. No matter how you cook the rice it still has the same amount of carbs. Stay away from rice, pasta, chips, white bread and sweets. Also grapes are very high in sugar.

    Small amount of brown rice is ok, and only whole grains.

  3. If you’ve been told to reduce your carb intake, definite limit your intake of RICE and BREAD products. Regardless of whether it is greasy or just plain, the rice and bread items in itself holds a lot of carbs.

    I would suggest you eat plenty of lean meats and vegetables.

    If you are trying to keep your sugar levels down, you should also avoid fruit juices, sodas, and candy/chocolate.

  4. Steamed rice is better than no fat, however it since the bran hull is removed it does not have the fiber and it’s less healthy.I would avoid all white flour rice etc. Sorry your eating habits have to change, but this is sumptin you will have to get used to. Favorite things are replaced with new favs, such as going out with friends to stayin at home and watching your new lil one’s facial expressions and cute lil animal noises.
