There are 3 suggestions to question “What is the right thing to say to a 14 yr. old girl who has just been diagnosed with severe Juvenile Diabetes?”

  1. First of all, I am very sorry to hear that your friend has been diagnosed. I am a mother of a Type 1 (aka Juvenile) Diabetes. My son was diagnosed at age 7….he is now 13.

There are wonderful online resources for you, your friend’s family, and this girl to utilize. Our personal favorite here in our family is the Children With Diabetes website. There are places on this site that she can go on and meet with teens who are diabetic. The wonderful thing about that is that it helps her to understand that she is NOT alone! She may be feeling that right now, but she is not.

There are some great books for the family (and you) to read, as well as the girl. My son’s favorite is a book called 487 Really Cool Tips for Kids with Diabetes by Spike and Bo Nasmyth Loy. They are kids that both got diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes within a year of each other.

One thing I would suggest is for this girl to attend a Diabetes camp. This is a GREAT place for her to meet other diabetics and to really know that she is not alone with this disease. My son and I went to a camp when he was first diagnosed, and this really helped him to manage his feelings with having this disease. I have included the link for where you can find camps in your area.

Finally I would lik to give you a link to a video posted on YouTube that really sums up what NOT to say to the girl or to the parents. It is a bit of humor, but very truthful!

    I hope this helps!

  2. million of children are fighting that disease today. your not alone. with the right medication she can regulate the diabetes

  3. just say youre sorry to hear about it and offer to help
