What test does a doctor test a patient to find if he has diabetic mellitus, type 1?

The child is 8 years old. He feel fatigued, mislaid weight as well as his feet feel tingling.

There are 4 suggestions to question “What test does a doctor test a patient to find if he has diabetic mellitus, type 1?”

  1. A C-peptide test can be done when diabetes has just been found and it is not clear whether type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes is present. A person whose pancreas does not make any insulin (type 1 diabetes) has a low level of insulin and C-peptide. A person with type 2 diabetes has a normal or high level of C-peptide.

  2. I think you should go to a doctor and not wait for an answer on here. I have an 9 year old son and I would not mess around with that. But to answer your question all they have to do to check for diabetes is a simple blood test. Type 1 is most often in children. It is when the pancreas does not make enough insulin, therefore u have to take insulin shots or an oral medicine. I sure hope that this helps you and that you get him to a doctor. Diabetes can cause serious health problems if not treated. With these symptoms he needs a doctor anyway.

  3. I have given Annie a ‘thumbs up’ but I would like to elaborate. To determine whether or not someone is a diabetic any of the following may be done. Fasting glucose, 2 hour post-prandial (after meal) glucose, a glycated hemoglobin A1C (which approximates the 90 day mean (average) glucose), and /or a glucose tolerance test although I do not favor the latter. Once the diagnosis of diabetes is made attention shifts to determining whether it is type 1 or type 2. I am not aware of anyone as young as 8 years old being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The youngest that I am aware of is age 10 although this does not guarantee that your son would have type 1 diabetes if he is found to have diabetes in the first place. The beta cells of the pancreas make proinsulin which is the form in which it is stored in the pancreas. When proinsulin is released both the C and N terminals are cleaved off and it is released as insulin. A C-Peptide measures the presence of the C terminal. If it is negative then the diagnosis is type 1 and if it is positive then the diagnosis is type 2. Insulin levels may be measured as well. No insulin would imply type 1 diabetes. The insulin level may not be helpful in type 2 diabetes as it may be normal, high, or low depending upon how long a person has had type 2 diabetes. OK so that is how the diagnosis of diabetes is made and that is how type 1 is distinguished from type 2. Your son feels fatigue which is a vague and common symptom. It is true that markedly elevated glucose levels tend to make individuals feel fatigued but not as an isolated symptom. The same may be said of weight loss. It is common as one of the presenting symptoms of type 1 diabetes but it is very seldom the predominant symptom. The manner in which type 1 diabetes presents is as follows. Polydipsia (increased thirst), polyuria (increased urination), polyphagia (increased appetite), weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision. ‘Tingling’ in the feet would be a very uncommon isolated symptom of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes but it is sometimes seen. You do not provide much information but based upon what you have said I would question the diagnosis of diabetes type 1 or type 2. Having said that it is not possible to diagnose people in this forum as there are too many inherent limitations. I believe that weight loss in an 8 year old always warrants a visit to the physician’s office. Glucose may be checked although I am certain that thyroid function will be checked as well. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you both the very best of health and in all things may God bless.

  4. It’s called a Glucose Tolerance Test.
